Adult class 18+

The emphasis in this class will be on light in the landscape and how it impacts on color, form and composition. Students will work using photographs and sketches to create light-filled studio acrylic or oil landscape paintings. There will be instruction on the fundamentals of landscape painting, including a discussion of the importance of light on the value, design, composition, and color of a landscape painting. Students will be guided as they work on their own studio landscape paintings.

Supplies: Sketchbook ( can be a small 5” x 7” sketchbook or up to 9” x 12”) A soft lead (2B or softer) pencil, a black marker or sharpie Acrylic or Oil Paints: Suggested Colors: Titanium White Cadmium Yellow Light Yellow Ochre Cadmium Red Alizarin Crimson Ultramarine Blue Cobalt Blue Transparent Red Oxide Optional Color: Viridian I recommend Liquitex, Golden, Utrecht and Sennelier acrylic paints. Medium: Acrylics: Water and a container for your medium. Acrylic matte or satin or gloss medium. Oils: Gamsol or Turpenoid (no others will be allowed in the classroom) Painting Support: 1 canvas pad at least 11 x 14, a roll of painters, artists or masking tape and a backing board (foamcore, cardboard, drawing board, or mdf board basically anything stiff enough to tape canvas to) and 1-2 canvas panels 11 x 14 to 12 x 16. Palette: Acrylics: A palette for acrylic paints or a disposable paper palette pad. Oils: A wood palette or a disposable paper palette pad. (NOTE: All palettes need to be at least 11” x 14” in size) Brushes: Acrylics: Synthetic Brushes made for Acrylics (I recommend: Utrecht Tuscan Series brushes or Princeton 6300 series brushes): Sizes 4, 6, 10 Flats Oils: Same size brushes as for Acrylics,but hog’s hair bristle Flats (I recommend Robert Simmons Signets or Blick Masterstroke brushes) Paper Towels: One roll A white or neutral color plastic table or drop cloth
