This class will cover the basics of colored pencil – layering, blending, color theory and composition – and include working on different surfaces, from watercolor paper, slate tiles, colored paper, and film. You will have the opportunity to work from your photos or still lifes. The class is suitable for beginners and intermediate students. Friendly constructive critiques will be held to help you advance your work.
Supplies: Regular graphite pencil for drawing (your choice), Kneaded eraser, Mars Staedtler eraser or other eraser, Pencil sharpener. Set of professional color pencils. It is important to get good pencils or your results will not be as good and you will be extremely frustrated. Some brands are Prismacolor Premier (set of 48 is good), Faber-Castel Polychromos, Caran d’Ache Luminance, Lyra, Brunyzeel, …. Please do not get student grade pencils like Crayola etc. You will only be frustrated. Please buy professional quality pencils. Sketchbook or paper for some warm-up exercises. Paper of your choice. Some options could be – hot press watercolor paper (Fabriano Artistico is nice), Strathmore Bristol vellum 500 series, Stonehenge drawing paper... If you have done graphite drawings in the past you can probably use the same paper. You know better than me what paper works for you.
